It was created by sculptor R.T. "Skip" Wallen and was installed in 1985 as a tribute to the importance of whales to the economy and culture of the area. The statue is a favorite spot for visitors to take photos and is often decorated with seasonal decorations, such as a Santa hat during the holiday season.
